Robert F. Smith: Partner, JMI Equity
Mr. Smith began his business career in 1994 as an investment banking associate at Alex. Brown & Sons, after having served as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy from 1987 until 1991. From 1994 until 1999, Mr. Smith was employed by Alex. Brown serving as a Vice President in their Technology Investment Banking Group, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions and public equity financings. While at Alex. Brown, Mr. Smith worked on transactions involving Astea International, Inc., Computer Task Group, Inc., Datastream Systems, Inc., INSO Corporation, i2 Technologies, Inc. and RSA Security, Inc. In 1999, Mr. Smith joined ABS Capital Partners, a $1.4 billion private equity firm, where he focused on mid- to later-stage software company investments.
Mr. Smith joined JMI in 2000 and is based in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Smith was elected as a partner of JMI in 2001. He serves on the board of directors of AirClic, Applimation, Inc, Appriss, Inc., QuIC and Seismic Micro-Technology, Inc.
Mr. Smith received a B.S. with Distinction from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and a M.B.A. from Duke University in 1994
